Where Will Your Company Be in Five Years? Lessons from AIIM/On Demand - by Cary Sherburne

Although our official On Demand coverage has concluded, there was more I wanted to cover along the lines of workflow automation.  First, as I reported in my earlier workflow article, Charlie Pesko stated in his keynote, "Every time a human touches a job, you lose profit." He added, "When you add value to documents in production, you increase profits," and pointed out that there is a growing digital divide among printers, stating that if you find yourself on the wrong side of the divide, you will be at a significant competitive disadvantage.....More

Technology News from Exstream, EFI, Kodak, Mohawk, SeeFile, Oce, Konica Minolta, and Xerox - by Patrick Henry

Output devices and workflow solutions were the centers of attention at press briefings held by a number of vendors at On Demand. The various announcements made it clear that the evolution of technologies for digital document production is far from over as the manufacturers continue to raise the bars for speed, image and color quality, cost-effective output, and end-to-end production control.....More

Moving to Another Level in Flatbed UV Printing - by Andy Tribute

Screen last year purchased the UK company, Inca Digital, and this company has probably the greatest experience of any company of running high-speed drop on demand inkjet printing operations within the POP (Point of Purchase) markets. Inca created the market for large format flatbed inkjet printing in January 2001 when it launched its first product, the Eagle 44.....More

Mohawk Papers: Playing the Environmental Card - by Cary Sherburne

Mohawk Fine Papers continues to play a leadership role in papers designed for both digital printing and environmental sustainability.  At the recent On Demand show, the company was touting its new Beckett Concept and Expression papers and distributing a booklet called Sense and Sustainability, meant as an educational piece on environmental sustainability, specifically as it relates to paper manufacturing and use....More

Last Thoughts on On Demand - by Frank Romano

The On Demand show has ended. Go in peace. They say that 25,000 people were there and I stopped counting at 12,000. But the memory lingers on and here are some musings on issues that may be of interest....More

The Inkjets are Coming! Screen, IBM, Kodak, RISO - by Noel Ward

The inkjets are coming! The inkjets are coming! That's not unlike the cry of Paul Revere who left Boston on an April night some 232 years ago to warn the colonists that the British were on the March and revolution was in the air....More

Workflow Automation at On Demand - by Cary Sherburne

It was terrific to see On Demand back in Boston after all these years, and the new convention center is marvelous.  Not the least of its wonders is free wireless access throughout! The recent show trend toward more emphasis on the business of printing and less emphasis on the printing equipment itself continued....More

Schwarz Examines "The Parallel Evolution and Convergence of Enterprise Content Management and Business Intelligence" - by Patrick Henry

In Wednesday’s (4-18) opening keynote, John Schwarz, CEO of Business Objects, discussed how organizations can marry "business intelligence" (BI) solutions to database content for better decision-making and improved performance across the board. His company is a $1.3 billion provider of BI software company with more than 42,000 customers and a network of more than 3,000 partners and resellers......More

"Transpromo": ON DEMAND Vendors Demonstrate How to Meet CMO Needs - by Barb Pellow

This year’s ON DEMAND show was a strong indicator that industry analysts, equipment vendors, and software solution providers are getting excited about what is now being termed the "transpromo" opportunity. Transactional documents are those that are necessary to run a business, including invoices and statements. These documents are clearly a major focus for corporate printing....More

Pesko Urges Printers To Leap the "Digital Divide" So They Can Be Right Where the POD Action Is - by Patrick Henry

Charlie Pesko, president of InfoTrends, set the tone for On Demand with an opening day (4-17) keynote on the rich opportunities that await printers ready to embrace the new realities of what he has long described as "the fastest growing segment of the printing & publishing market"—digitally enabled print on demand (POD).....More

What They Think about the ONDEMAND Show, Views from Attendees - by Patrick Henry

While at the AIIM/On Demand expo last week I spoke with many printers and service providers. I asked about the most impressive technologies at the show and also asked some to tell me their most critical issue for their business. Below are some of the comments.....More

The Battle is Joined: The Shifting Battlefield for Color - by Noel Ward

Just before the On Demand Show, my colleague Andy Tribute noted that there is a battle brewing for color supremacy. He's quite right, and in my opinion the battle is likely to be a lengthy one. Market share may indicate who wins, but this battle could also foment changes in how vendors price and market their equipment and software, how machines are selected and used, and how owners of the various machines market their businesses.....More

...From Frank’s On Demand Notebook - by Frank Romano

The AIIM On Demand show is a good microcosm of the digital printing market and all the sub markets that support it. The weather was wet and generally miserable, but the crowds were dry, and generally upbeat.....More

Please Come to Boston for the Rainstorms - by Noel Ward

OK, so it wasn't springtime, as I suggested in one of my pre-show articles. So sue me. Instead we got lots of rain, plenty of wind and being inside at the shiny new Boston Convention Center definitely beat being outdoors. There was a lot to see, and after a string of back-to-back meetings I'm not sure quite where to begin.....More

EFI's CEO Guy Gecht: Successful Printers Growing Faster than the S&P 500 - by Cary Sherburne

"At On Demand we have one of our biggest new products ever. For the first time in the public eye, we'll be unveiling our new Fiery platforms for production print. These new Fiery platforms get the very most out of the engines they drive, turning them into the most effective competitive weapons they can be. This is a major step forward for digital color production in terms of engine ROI, color management, productivity, VDP and digital workflow....More

On Demand Printing and Publishing….Or is It "Marketing On Demand"? - by Barb Pellow

It is clear that today’s chief marketers face intense pressure from CEOs and corporate boards to deliver bottom line results. These marketing executives are seeking new tools and techniques to improve the relevance, accountability, and performance of their organizations. The average CMO succumbs to this pressure and has an average tenure of less than two years....More

Kevin Joyce is the Managing Director of the United States & Canada Region for Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. He took time out of busy preparations in the week preceding the On Demand Expo to speak with WhatTheyThink about Kodak’s new approach to trade shows, and to generally update us on the state of affairs at Kodak. A Broadened Product Line Lets Océ Cast a Wider Net - by Noel Ward

Last month I reported on the highlights of the Océ Open House in Poing, Germany and the broadening line of products the company is bringing to market. As I noted, the new products allow the company to compete at a different level than they have in recent years and a couple of systems provide a unique selling proposition. To get a better sense of what its latest offerings mean to the company and the market I tracked down Guy Broadhurst, Vice President of Product Marketing, for an interview.....More

Ready, AIIM, Aspire - by Frank Romano

Next week there is a little-known secret that most printers miss or ignore. The On Demand show is actually two shows in one. The other part is a show run by AIIM, a 60-year old association for enterprise content management -- the people who manage documents, content, records, and business processes....More

Rochester Software Associates, has spent over two decades developing products that support many separate areas of the document workflow. Some focus on just one or two tasks while others do several different things. This year the company is expanding its successful offerings further with its new Enterprise Workflow System designed to streamline the convergence of data center and network printing. WTT caught up with Tim Kelly, Senior Vice President at RocSoft to find out more before the show.....More

Integrated Marketing Campaign Management…Markets Want It; Vendors are Delivering It; Graphic Communications Service Providers are “Getting It” - by Barb Pellow

In a difficult economy, the Chief Marketing Officer faces internal as well as external challenges. The marketing budget in corporate America typically falls victim to intense scrutiny. This is a results-driven age, and the CMO feels intense pressure from Chief Executive Officers, boards, shareholders, and customers to deliver measurable results. To ensure continued access to the budgets necessary to adequately promote their brands, marketing executives need to focus on ensuring that they are delivering these quantifiable bottom-line results.....More

Total Workflow a Hot Topic at On Demand and IPA Technical Conference - by Cary Sherburne

Workflow will continue to be a hot topic at On Demand, and the IPA Technical Conference will be a great venue to follow up on workflow issues in more detail. In its 42nd year, the historically well-attended IPA Technical Conference is scheduled for June 5th through 7th, 2007, at the Westin O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois. ....More

It is Not an Inkjet OnDemand! - by Andy Tribute

Yesterday, in Noel Ward's review of next week's OnDemand event he states, HP's Larry Tracy is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion, "Is Inkjet the Technology Story for 2007?" on April 18. Given the pace of change in inkjet, this could be a good session. I would like to follow on about this subject and state that inkjet will not be the technology story of 2007, but it will be in 2008....More

Please Come to Boston for the Springtime - by Noel Ward

There are a number of ways to tell spring has arrived. The southern parts of the country are in that wonderful stretch of temperate weather before the heat of summer sets in. Up north, seasonal ice cream stands are opening up. And in the digital printing biz the On Demand show is taking over a convention center. This year the city is Boston, and the show is ensconced in a new convention center just across the inner harbor from the airport. In fact, AIIM/On Demand is probably the largest show the new facility has seen since opening in 2006...More
