Apple Acquires Xerox, Al Gore Named President
CUPERTINO, California -- April 1, 2003 -- Apple Computer announced at a press conference today that it will acquire Xerox. Anne M. Mulcahy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Xerox made the announcement in a short three-minute speech available in QuickTime at www.apple.quicktime.com. Mulcahy will join Apple as a part-time consultant to Apples CEO, Steve Jobs.
Steve Jobs explained the reasons why Apple decided to acquire Xerox, "Due to the failure of my spam blocking software, an email from a former Apple employee (Steve Wozniak) made it to my desktop. The email contained a press release from Xerox announcing the iGen3 and Xeroxs switch to the "i" strategy. In subsequent meetings between Apple and Xerox, it became clear that Xerox would be a much stronger "i" company if they joined the leader in "i" technology. No company has more iTools than Apple Computer. Products like iCal, iSync, iPhotos, iTune, iDvd, iPod, iBook, iMac will integrate perfectly with the iGen3."
The Docutech name will give way to iDocs and each iDoc-printing device will be shipped with the complete iLife suite. At Drupa 2004 Apple will introduce the new iGen4 Apple iDoc i6060, and i2020s digital printing devices. Standard features will include Firewire 800 and Apples exclusive SuperDrives (DVD-R/CD-RW).
Steve Jobs also announced that former Vice President Al Gore, who had been elected to the Apple Board of Directors March 20, 2003, would join the company as Apples President. Fighting back tears, a clearly emotional Gore spoke candidly of his long-term affection for Apple Computer. "To finally become President, return to the company I co-founded with Steve back in 1977, means more to me than being the Father of the Internet."
