Graph Expo Special Reports
Mohawk Paper Mills—Going for the “Green” at GraphExpo
by Cary Sherburne
October 9, 2003 -- Mohawk Paper Mills is one of the few remaining privately-held, family-owned
paper mills in the U.S. Located in Cohoes NY, just north of Albany,
Mohawk has two mills, three paper machines and a capacity of 100,000
tons of paper production. The company is known for its coated and
uncoated text and cover paper grades for commercial and digital printing.
At GraphExpo, Mohawk unveiled Color Copy, a new line of papers the
company describes as “the next generation family of color copy papers.” The
papers are manufactured with what Mohawk calls a Digital Imaging Surface,
a new surface treatment specifically engineered to deliver increased
print fidelity from toner-based color printing technologies.
Color Copy Premium Neon White is 100 bright, and has heavy weight
papers available for premium color copy applications. The family also
contains 96 bright text and gloss papers.
Mohawk also announced Color Copy 100% Recycled as part of the new
product family. This high performance color copy paper, manufactured
from 100% post consumer recycled fiber and in a 96 bright PCWhite
shade, is, according to Mohawk, the only chlorine-free, 100% recycled
paper on the market in this product class. The cut sheet brand, targeted
toward retail applications, is being well received by Mohawk's merchant
channel, according to the company. The paper is certified by Green
Seal, a not-for-profit organization devoted to environmental standard
setting, product certification, and environmental education.
In other environmental news, Mohawk announced that it began purchasing
non-polluting wind power on August 1st, 2003, making it the first
paper mill in the U.S. to use wind power for manufacturing operations.
New wind turbines are the fastest growing and most cost-effective
renewable energy technology, producing electricity with zero fuel
and zero pollution, according to Mohawk. Mohawk has purchased the
wind energy from Community Energy, Inc., a marketer of emission-free
wind energy. The wind energy for the mill's Cohoes facility will be
generated at New York State's largest wind farm near Syracuse, New
York, and power from this source will be utilized in the manufacture
of Color Copy 100% Recycled.
Mohawk estimates that 20% of its power consumption needs for the
manufacture of paper will be met by the new wind power agreement.
According to Community Energy, this implementation will remove more
than 6.1 million pounds of carbon dioxide from the air – which is
the equivalent of taking more than 300 cars off the road each year.
