MAN Roland — Booth #3237

MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AG is the world's second largest printing systems manufacturer and the world's market leader in web offset. MAN Roland operates out of Offenbach, Augsburg and Plauen in Germany. It employs 9,000 staff and generates annual sales of $2.14 billion (EUR 1.7 billion), with an export share of 83%. Web and sheetfed offset are its major product lines for publishing, general commercial and packaging printing. MAN Roland is the only printing press manufacturer to be a partner of the WAN (World Association of Newspapers). In North America, MAN Roland Inc. operates a network of five regional sales and service facilities, staffed by over 250 employees.

MAN Roland’s Graph Expo exhibit offers printers an opportunity to enter a world of innovation, automation, profitability, service and support. A first-class VIP lounge provides a comfortable and contemporary environment where visitors will be able to relax and enjoy refreshments while viewing live production from a customer site that runs ROLAND 700 and ROTOMAN presses. Showgoers can also experience printnet in action, and interview the printservices team for the latest solutions which provide total support for the life of your press.

A Six-Up Perfector Premieres

MAN Roland’s 29-inch press line, the ROLAND 500, has added perfecting to its industry-leading list of capabilities. The ROLAND 500 with InlinePerfector makes its North American trade show premiere at Graph Expo.

The press is the only one in its class with a single-drum sheet turning system combined with double-diameter cylinders. This makes it able to handle thicker substrates — up to 24 pt in the perfecting mode. The advancement also produces perfecting speeds as fast as 15,000 sph. In its non-perfecting mode, the ROLAND 500 can handle substrates up to 40pt. thick at 18,000 sph.

One-Touch Makereadies Debuts

The new generation ROLAND 700 handles substrates ranging from bible stock to 40 pt. board, including corrugated, plastics, and special materials, at a maximum speed of 17,000 sph. All ROLAND 700 models are available with single-drum perfecting. The press’ printnet PressManager and available QuickChange modules enables One Touch Makereadies. The ROLAND 700 also offers “inline everything” as options, equipping printers with the ability to apply foil effects, die cut, emboss, inspect print quality, sort and eject waste sheets, and complete other value added procedures all while the press is printing.

A QuickStart for Web Presses

QuickStart is advanced software that MAN Roland web press users can access to enhance the performance of their presses’ PECOM operating and automation system. Its advantages will be presented as part of the Commercial Web Seminar.

The innovation automatically controls all aspects of the run-up portion of makeready, where the web press needs to be brought up to speed and up to color as quickly as possible. By automating the start-up sequence, QuickStart requires only one operator activation point to begin run-up. All of the in-between sequences are taken care of automatically by the program, so they proceed smoothly and precisely, without human delay or error. The results: considerably less paper waste and a considerably faster makeready.

Commercial Web Offset Seminar

QuickStart is just one of many topics for the commercial web offset interactive seminar titled "Maximizing the potential of your MAN Roland press.” The presentation is open to current MAN Roland users and also those interested in learning more about commercial printing advances. Key topics will include reducing waste, PECOM presetting and reporting functions, achieving faster makereadies, the importance of on-press procedures and processes, QuickStart, and finding time for press maintenance.

24/7 Service, Support & Supplies

The globally scoped, localized focused coverage provided by MAN Roland’s printservices will be presented at multiple locations. Printers will find total support for the life of their presses and explore the program offerings such as repairs and maintenance, training, project management, upgrades, parts and supplies and more.

A demonstration of the worldwide, 24/7 TeleSupportCenter (TSC) will show how MAN Roland’s experienced technical teams can remotely diagnose and repair web press issues. Visitors will hear TSC success stories and see how TSC operates their 24/7 coverage, which saves the time and expense of an onsite emergency repair call.

Visitors can also explore printcomMAN Roland’s consumables, parts and supply source. Its latest development: an eCommerce website called manrolanddirect.com. The interactive portal connects MAN Roland customers with an inventory of over 80,000 spare parts and consumable components —24/7.

Expanding the Envelope

A working tour of the Victor Envelope Manufacturing Company in Bensenville, Illinois will embark from McCormick Place on Monday, October 16, at 11:00 AM. Showgoers will be able to experience how Victor automates the production of custom envelopes in its 250,000 sq ft facility. The plant’s 6-color ROLAND 500 will demonstrate its ability to run very light weight stocks at incredibly high speeds. Lunch will be included on this tour.

Networking at Darwill

Monday, October 16, at 1:00 PM is the departure time for a tour to the 60,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility of Darwill in Hillside, Illinois. Describing itself as “an integrated supplier of print, direct mail and fulfillment,” Darwill networks three ROLAND 700 presses through printnet. The working presentation will focus on how Darwill maximizes the use of automation as well as mixes digital and offset work to produce its award-winning jobs more cost effectively.

Packaging Productivity

Package printing can open up a new world of opportunity for commercial printers. A tour of Accord Carton in Alsip, Illinois will give them a first-hand look at how it is profitably done. One of the Midwest’s fastest growing packaging printers, Accord stepped up in size this past summer to a new 56-inch ROLAND 900 to complement and expand upon its 40-inch production stream. Participants will see the presses work a variety of substrates during the tour, which leaves McCormick Place on Tuesday, October 17, at 11:00 AM, lunch included.

Newsworthy Tour

Newspapers continue to lead the industry in automation and innovation. As the worldwide market leader in newspaper printing systems, MAN Roland is offering a feature tour of suburban Chicago’s leading newspaper — the Daily Herald. Winner of the 2006 Publisher of the Year, a Production All Star honor and the prestigious Ifra Color Quality Club award, the Daily Herald is produced on a REGIOMAN newspaper press in a fully automated facility that has become a model of efficiency for printers throughout the world. Showgoers are invited to register for the plant tour, which will take place on Tuesday, October 17, at 1:00 PM. For more information: www.manroland.com/graphexpo06.

MLP U.S.A., Inc. — Booth #5612

Diamond 3000LX sheetfed press

The 28 x 40-inch Diamond 3000LX accommodates .002-inch paper up to .040-inch board at 16,000 sheets per hour. A package of specifically designed optional features ensures smooth, markless sheet travel on plastics and synthetic paper. The demonstration press includes six printing units, an inline tower coater, extended delivery and UV curing system from Grafix LLC. The newly developed SimulChanger will allow all six plates to be changed at the same time.

Mitsubishi SimulChanger

SimulChanger, a new imulChanger, Mitsubishi’s simultaneous plate cylinder phasing system, targets the time-consuming plate-changing steps in press makereadies. The fully automated SimulChanger completes the plate changes on all printing units without the operator being present at the units in approximately one minute, regardless of the number of colors involved. Operators load new plates into cassettes while the press is running. All other steps are automatically accomplished with the touch of a button at the COMRAC press control console.

Mitsubishi Color Control System V (MCCS-V)

The Mitsubishi Color Control System V (MCCS-V) image-scanning spectrophotometer controls color tones of the entire image using all the image data for a print sheet. When measuring a 28 x 40-inch sheet, it collects data from 240,000 points in both horizontal and vertical directions. The MCCS-V has spectrophotometry and densitometry capabilities; it looks at the L.a.b. characteristics of color, as well as the reflective density.

Portable DRA

Portable DRA is an exclusive press performance measurement and analysis system for determining the magnitude and direction of movement on a printing press at a company’s production facility. Portable DRA measures different positions on test sheets to detect and calculate unit-to-unit, sheet-to-sheet movement on the gear side, operator side, lead edge, tail edge and infeed. It recommends solutions to remedy identified problems. For more information: www.mhi-mpp.com/e/.
