Taking Issue with Dr. Joe

February 20 , 2006 -- I read the Dr. Joe column regularly. I have to take issue with his pollyanna conclusions about our economic future. Specifically, regarding employment prospect in the USA into the future. Dr. Joe contends that we are moving to a service economy and this is good because service jobs are cleaner and pay better - except for ...

The BLM released a labor forecast for the next decade and the results are chilling. Of the top 25 jobs only 2 (teaching positions) paid over $30,000 per year. None of the remaining jobs are technical or require higher education.

Enough with free trade. We need to protect our economy and our ability to have a standard of living. Free trade can only work when your trading partners are equals who play according to the same economic rules as you do. That excludes economies that are subsidized by government and currencies whose values are not allowed to rise and fall with the market.

Thank You,

Alan Kabakoff
