Additional Questions and Answers ( Dave Bates, K/P Corporation)
Question: Do you use XMPie for "Complex Direct Marketing"?
(You described it under "Complex Variable", and since XMPie is normally used more in the former - reach graphics, photos, languages, etc., and response URLs, I was wondering about that)
Answer: We just upgraded to XMPie version 2.0 and are just trying to use it for even simple variable to replace Jet Letter so that we only need to use one application. It is our only variable tool, so we are using it for all the complex, color, swap images, graphs including linking to micro websites.
Question: How do you look at the trade offs between equipment speed versus labor capabilities/cost? How about inline integration of addressing with direct mail personalization?
Answer: We try to take equipment costs plus labor costs divided by actual running speed at different run lengths including any setup at any given number of hours we expect to run the equipment per month. We are getting to a cost per piece at different run lengths and different total running hours per month. You’re looking to get an ROI on the machine and the labor and get a competitive rate to sell in the market. Do it for different machines and pick one.
We always plan on addressing at the same time we’re doing variable whether on a Xerox box or an Indigo
Question: I am trying to choose between Scitex and MCS/HP for
hardware for a simple variable printing application.
MCS/HP seems to have the print quality, and Scitex has the speed advantage. Which one should I choose?
Answer: I’m afraid I don’t know the machines well enough to provide specific input. But generally if the market will buy the print quality I’d go for the speed. If they want the higher print quality the decision is made. Assuming price differences in the machines, will the customer pay more for the higher quality?
Question: On Slide 14 Why is it suggested that charging for Print Management is a process not chargeable? What do you define as Print Management?
Answer: As a printer only, you can’t charge for program management, estimating, administration, reporting, receiving materials… In Fulfillment you can charge a monthly program management fee (which might include estimating), receiving, BOM maintenances, reporting…. If you’re in the Fulfillment business and managing print in the contract, then you could charge for print management too. I didn’t make that differentiation – Thanks
