WhatTheyThink Special Report Looks At The Current State Of “Green Printing” In The U.S. Commercial Printing Industry

May 13, 2008 -- Lexington, Kentucky USA -- WhatTheyThink, the leading news and information site for the graphic communications industry, announces the immediate availability of “Printing Goes Green: A WhatTheyThink Primer on Environmental Sustainability in the Commercial Printing Industry.” This 48-page report provides an overview of the state of so-called “green printing” initiatives in the U.S. commercial printing industry. The report provides the results of a March 2008 survey of commercial printing establishments conducted by WhatTheyThink’s Economics and Research Center, descriptions of the leading green certification organizations—such as the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, the Forest Stewardship Council, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and ISO 14001—and a variety of steps commercial printers can take toward becoming environmentally sustainable and responsible. The report also offers conclusions and recommendations to companies industrywide interested in pursuing green initiatives, as well as resources with which to obtain additional information.

“Printing Goes Green” is available for online purchase at the WhatTheyThink eStore in PDF format.

Researcher's Comments...

“Regardless of one’s attitude toward the seriousness of the threat posed by global climate change, the fact remains that it is a serious issue for an increasing number of consumers and, thus, businesses. The need for ‘green cred’ is becoming a driving force in business today, and the printing industry is no exception. The larger issue, however, is that the steps that companies can take toward environmental sustainability can also lead to better-run, more efficient companies, and, again, the printing industry is no exception.”

According to the Report…

-- in a March 2008 survey conducted by WhatTheyThink’s Economics and Research Center, the top “green” practice that U.S. commercial printers say they have currently implemented is “promote recycled papers as better than ‘typical’ papers,” cited by 30% of all respondents;

-- 43% of all responding companies said that sustainable printing initiatives are “more important to our company than it is to our customers at this time” and 30% said that they are “not essential to our business or to our customers”;

-- 10% of all respondents say they currently have some form of certification from an environmentally sustainable printing authority;

-- WhatTheyThink reports are available for online purchase at the WhatTheyThink eStore in PDF format (http://members.whattheythink.com).
